Unlocking the Heart of Story: Plotting with Screenwriting Techniques
Workshop with Debra Goelz
Plotting can feel like the most intimidating part of writing—yet humans know story in our bones. From myths to fairy tales to modern fantasy, stories follow a rhythm that resonates with us because they mirror transformation, survival, and community.
In this workshop, we’ll strip story down to its essence: a character who wants something, faces obstacles, and changes. Then we’ll build back up, exploring how modern screenwriting techniques (inspired by Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey and Blake Snyder’s beat system) can help writers of any genre craft narratives that grip readers from beginning to end.
You’ll learn:
✨ How the 3-act structure echoes our oldest myths
✨ Why readers instinctively expect certain “beats” in your story
✨ The 15 key moments that make a plot satisfying—and how to adapt them for novels
✨ Flexible strategies for both plotters and pantsers
Whether you’re writing epic fantasy, romance, or something entirely your own, this session will give you practical tools to strengthen your story’s spine—while leaving plenty of room for your unique voice and imagination.
Come prepared to laugh, take notes, and maybe realize you’ve known “story” all along. SUNDAY ONLY.
